I've worked with Burton Group, Gartner, IDC, and several others and I have to agree that Burton has the lead in many ways. If you haven't been to the Burton Catalyst show it's THE identity management event each year. Great presentations and they forgo the 'exhibits' and instead have vendor suites at the end of the day where you can get food, entertainment and, of course, info on their products.

I've found that it's best to take a look at everything that's available and then make your decisions / plans. Unfortunately, there's not enough time to do all your research first-hand.

There's also not enough budget to buy all the reports you need. If you're interested, I've started a blog to link to the full IT analyst reports that are licensed and distributed by technology vendors.

Burton doesn't show up very often in this category, but you'll find the Gartner Magic Quadrants, Forrester WAVE reports, IDC market forecasts, etc.

You can find them all here: vantelo.com

I never have, no. You saw that James McGovern talked about this in his blog, too, which was really the first time I'd given it any thought. I'll give it more. Thanks.

As to the RedMonk bake-off (mentioned in your comments on McGovern's blog) ... I don't know where that came from, and I must have been in a weakened state to respond to it at all. :)

I had the same experience you did, and at first wondered why I would want access to Burton... for the same reasons you mention. Reformed! It only took a couple reports to catch on.

I love the enterprise licensing, and I love seeing developers getting excited about reading analysis. Burton definitely changed that culture for us in ways that other firms didn't.

Do you guys do the 1/2 hour telebriefings or work sessions with them? You should.
